It all began in Porto Empedocle, Sicily when Joseph “Giuseppe” Gambacorta turned thirteen and was old enough to work in the family bakery. Located on a small side street, the bakery was known for the best baked goods in the area. So good that all the ships in the local port requested baked goods for their trips overseas so they never felt far from home. Giuseppe came to the United States with the knowledge and skills of baking truly authentic Italian breads, cookies and pastries. Through his passion and hard work ethic his dream came to life in 1962 when he opened his first store in Bensonhurst Brooklyn. Giuseppe’s breads, cookies and pastries gained recognition throughout the area. During the holidays, the demand was so great that the store had to be a 24 hour operation in order to supply the local customers. In the decades to follow, Giuseppe opened 2 additional stores and expanded into the wholesale market to meet the demand of restaurants, supermarkets and other specialty stores.
